What is Microsoft SharePoint?

Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007, also known as MOSS 2007, is the successor of MS CMS 2002 and SharePoint Portal 2003.

Where MS CMS focuses on web-based content management, SharePoint aims at creating a versatile collaborative environment for teams and individuals inside medium-sized and large organizations with MS Office as a cornerstone.
MOSS 2007 is the integration of these two product lines and leverages on the new Microsoft platforms, Office 2007, Windows Vista, Exchange Server 2007 and Windows Live.

Why use Microsoft SharePoint?

The combination of web-based content management and a collaborative tool gives you:

  • a central platform to manage your Internet presence,
  • your extranet for your partners and customers,
  • and your intranet as a tool of daily use for your employees.
  • Add to this excellent integration with Microsoft Office and you know why your productivity will improve.

Microsoft SharePoint features

Typical content management features include in-site editing, workflow, permission based access etc. But SharePoint is more than content management. It also features

  • document management with check-in/check-out;
  • versioning;
  • integration with e.g. MS Word;
  • And it is about cooperating: when preparing your next meeting you can easily create an ad hoc workspace (i.e. a website) for it, invite attendees, provide them with documents and to do's etc;
  • state-of-the-art technology. SharePoint is built with .NET technology and allows you to integrate applications via e.g. web parts;
  • enterprise search capabilities.
