What is a (enterprise) web content management system?

A website without a content management system (CMS) is unthinkable. We strongly believe in empowering (business) users, so they can maintain their sites themselves. After all, are baseline “ It’s not a website, it’s your business” applies to (enterprise) web content management as well: you should be in full control of your content; you should be able to fully exploit your website, your business.

The Reference disposes of all required expertise to turn (enterprise) content management projects into a success. We do not only assist our customers in streamlining their internal processes - from content scouting over creation and validation to updating - but we also implement and support a broad range of off-the-shelf CMS and search products. This allows us to choose a content management system and search solution that fits the individual needs and budget of each individual customer.

When should you use a CMS?

  • Your Internet. Use a CMS to truly exploit your website and optimize your Internet presence.
  • Your Intranet. Use a CMS or collaborative platform with a powerful enterprise search to optimize your internal communication and boost employee productivity.
  • Your Extranet. A CMS can be a solid framework for creating extranet sites that not only consist of transactional applications but also provide lots of content such as e.g. a customer portal with product descriptions.

Why use a CMS?

  • the total cost of ownership of maintaining a website decreases drastically when using a content management system;
  • the increase in speed of operations: you can add and modify texts, documents, images, videos etc. much faster (say in Internet time);
  • control of your content thanks to features such as scheduled publishing, versioning, workflow, preview and many more;
  • using a CMS makes you independent of your IT department.

So which CMS should I choose?

Chosing a CMS yourself can be a daunting and very time-consuming process that requires thorough knowledge of the various options in the market and their abilitity-to-execute. And what about pricing, scalability and needed custom development?

The Reference has been in that CMS market since 1993 (!) and can advise, support and implement a CMS-solution tailor made to your company's needs. E-mail us or get in touch directly: +32 9 234 05 36 and ask for Anja Cappelle.

A history: The Reference & web content management

When we started in 1993 as the first web agency in Belgium we soon realized that our clients would love a tool to update their site without having to call us. Because there were no mature and affordable 3rd party tools available we developed our own web-based CMS avant la lettre: a database driven administration website with a WYSIWYG editor in Microsoft ActiveX technology.

We continued our product line – The Reference Virtual Enterprise – until about the year 2000. At that time the CMS market was getting more mature, and the pricing was getting more attractive. Moreover we realized that we are an Internet services company which is quite different than a product vendor. Hence we started to evaluate and implement third-party solutions. Since then we have built up a solid portfolio of CMS partnerships.
