Widgets and Mash-ups
Widgets are small parts that are shown on web pages. Each single element in a page is a widget, like a button on a form. The Reference builds widgets that provide advanced functionalities and data views. They can be plugged into existing websites and typically show data that is not residing on that website. Common examples are weather forecasts, stock information but can also be dashboard meters to display real time information about the commercial performance of your website!
Website mashups are created by using a variety of techniques to create useful new services
that are derived from existing ones. A mashup typically features a high level of interactivity,
user input, social networking and sometimes even encourage people to use them as the basis for
derivative works.
The most common mashups involve maps. True Web 2.0 extends this with a variety of new
applications: video, photo, search, news, …
Website developers can use data feeds and application programming interfaces (APIs) provided
by established sites such as Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, Amazon, eBay and others, which are created
specifically to encourage mashups.
